Thermo King’s Advanced Fresh Air Exchange Management system (AFAM+) has proved once again to be a viable option in the transport of Brazilian avocados. Hamburg Süd, which has utilized AFAM+ successfully for many years, performed the 16-day shipment of Avocado Fuerte from Santos, Brazil to Rotterdam, beginning in February of this year. The surveyors who met the shipment at Rotterdam’s port reported that the fruit arrived firm, beautifully dark green, and in good condition.
“We were very pleased with the AFAM+ performance, temperature control, and the overall condition of the avocados,” said Michaela Steineker, Global Reefer Coordinator, Hamburg Süd. “During the unpacking process, the fruit was inspected for several quality and maturity relevant parameters, all of which met the expectations of our customers.”
Upon loading of the avocados onto the Alianca Maua ship, the container temperature was set at a 5°C setpoint with a 24-hour defrost interval and a 10 percent maximum carbon dioxide (CO2) level. “The avocados were not properly pre-cooled, but the Thermo King MAGNUM(r) container refrigeration unit was still able to bring the load to return temperature range within 14 hours and reached the CO2 setpoint within 72 hours of start-up,” said Gino Ansaldi, Sales and Service Manager, South America. “And those numbers were maintained throughout the voyage despite ambient air temperatures that averaged 30-35°C before falling to 10°C near Rotterdam. In addition, the relative humidity recorded for the voyage was 95 percent, which was excellent for the avocados.”
Besides their good visual appearance and condition, the avocados’ temperature was measured for each of the 20 total pallets, and the MAGNUM unit was unplugged; cargo temperature was ranged between 5.5 and 5.8°C.
