Asda has announced that customers in six locations will now be able to purchase refurbished TVs in a first for a UK supermarket.
The retailer has refurbished three models of returned HD LED Smart Sharp and Polaroid TVs at its ERC (electrical returns centre) using recycled materials – and they will now be sold in its stores from as little as £100.
Customers in Folkestone, Leeds, Glasgow, Sunderland and Ellesmere Port, will be able to pick up one of three sizes of the TVs, including a 32”, 40” and 50”.
Energy ratings, barcodes and images have all printed been on the box for the TVs, which have been re-packaged to make clear to customers that they are refurbished.
By launching the trial and supporting the circular economy by increasing the longevity of products at its ERC, Asda is able to offer more affordable options to customers where budgets may be tighter.
Recommended retail price for a new HD LED 50” Smart Polaroid TV is £240, meaning customers could make a saving of up to £80 should they opt for a refurbished model for £160.
The retailer’s latest Income Tracker, an established barometer of household disposable income, revealed that UK households are now prioritising saving over spending as disposable income levels reach the highs seen prior to the cost-of-living crisis.
Income grew to £245 per week in July, the highest figure since March 2024. Despite this households are using spare cash to top up the savings depleted during the cost-of-living crisis and are more likely to opt for low-cost alternatives, with consumption down by 0.3% in Q2.
As well as increasing the longevity of returned electrical goods so they can be sold at a lower price for customers, the has environmental benefits with Asda using recycled materials and supporting the circular economy.
Lisa Lennon, Vice President – General Merchandise at Asda, said: “At Asda we’re committed to doing the right thing for customers and communities. Increasing the longevity of our products and supporting the circular economy has its clear environmental benefits and can also be a way for us to provide more affordable options to more of our customers.
“The trial is already proving very popular stores where it has launched and marks an excitement moment for us as we continue look at new ways we can further reduce our carbon footprint, and support customers where budgets may be stretched.”
