Australian contract packer for the dry food industry, Annex, is reporting that an Allen Coding 53XL80 thermal transfer coder has helped increase production efficiencies on one of its high output lines. The advanced system, originally purchased to replace an outdated and unreliable competitor printer, is applying a variety of data, including dates and batch codes, directly on to a range of flexible packaging materials.

Supplied as a turnkey project via Allen Coding’s Australian distributor, Result Group, the robust 53XL80 has successfully helped reduce set up and maintenance times and prompted Annex to order another unit for a brand new, high speed production line.

Melbourne-based Annex is a dry food and contract packing specialist partnering some of Australia’s leading food, FMCG, pharmaceutical and retail companies. The company also packs a number of own brands which are sold locally as well as overseas.

Alastair Sloan, Continuous Improvement Manager at Annex comments: “We have been working with the team at Result Group for many years and they are now our chosen partner for all coding and labelling products. They were quick to specify the Allen Coding 53XL80 when we required a new printer to replace an outdated and unreliable system on one of our high output lines.

Alastair continues: “Reliability, accuracy and print area were critical requirements but we also needed a printer that our operators could run and change formats easily without the need to call line setters and maintenance staff.”

Installed on a vertical form fill seal (VFFS) machine using bespoke mounting brackets specially made by Result Group, the Allen Coding 53XL80, which offers a maximum print area of 53mm x 80mm, is operating at speeds up to 50 packs per minute.

Alastair adds: “The back-up service provided by Result Group was also a key driver, as well as the associated software which enables us to quickly set up new formats and which other suppliers did not offer.

“The Allen Coding 53XL80 printer has served its purpose and we hope will continue to do so for many years to come. We are confident the second unit will do the same and would not hesitate to recommend Result Group and Allen Coding products to other companies,” he concludes.

With a two component, space saving design, Allen Coding’s 53XL80 thermal transfer printer offers a range of key features, including the iView colour touch screen with simple-to-use graphical user interface, multi-tasking a:touch module for convenient multi-printer operation, Ethernet and USB connectivity, and dual processors (one for communication and one for printing) to ensure optimum performance.

The 53XL80 also features a highly robust, industrial design and up to 600 metre ribbon capacity for extended use with minimal downtime. Designed to provide high speed printing of variable information in a wide variety of languages, the 53XL80 is capable of operating at speeds up to 450 prints per minute at five mm print height.

Allen Coding is part of the ITW Marking & Coding Division, which also comprises Diagraph, Foxjet, Norwood and Trident.
