Global wine competition, Concours Mondial de Bruxelles 2022, has named Animus Douro 2019 ‘Best Portuguese Red’ in this year’s contest. But shoppers won’t have to spend a fortune to get their hands on this gold medal winning wine, as it’s just £5.49 from Aldi.

Already a shopper favourite with over 540 5* ratings online, the delicate and complex red impressed judges to land the most coveted title of the Portuguese category, as well as two other accolades including ‘Portuguese Revelation Wine’ and a Grand Gold Medal.

All wines in the competition are blind tasted by the Concours Mondial de Bruxelles’ carefully curated panels of industry experts representing 45 nationalities. A medal is granted to less than 30% of the entered wines.

Supermarket Aldi is fast becoming the go-to destination for unexpected varieties, including outstanding Portuguese wines, at irresistibly low prices.

Wine expert and Mistress of Wine, Sam Caporn, says: “Shopping for good value Portuguese wine at Aldi is as simple as it gets. Their expertise in finding high-quality wines from this region and bringing them to shoppers at affordable prices has made it the supermarket of choice for Portuguese wine connoisseurs.

“It’s not surprising that Aldi’s Animus Douro caught the judges’ attention. It’s a complex wine with notes of red fruits, plum, and cedar; perfect for those among us who love a ripe, structured, and flavourful style.”
