Biona, the number one organic food supplier to leading UK retailers, is pleased to announce the launch of a trio of new spelt breakfast cereals. All three products tap into the current trend for minimally processed, organic breakfast options, and are available to retailers from February onwards.

First in the new range is Biona’s organic Crispy Spelt Flakes which are made from 100% whole organic spelt and nothing else, with an RRP of £3.29. Toasted for a light, crispy texture and naturally high in fibre and wholegrain, with no added sugar, salt or additives, it’s a clean-label cereal for health-conscious households. Next come the organic Spelt Puffs which are made with just one ingredient – 100% organic puffed spelt, with an RRP of £2.69. Naturally high in fibre and wholegrain, with no added sugar, salt or processing, this HFSS-compliant cereal offers simple, everyday nourishment that’s completely UPF-free. Finally, there’s the organic Honey Spelt Puffs which enjoy the addition of honey for a gently sweet, fibre-rich start to the day with no added sugar or syrups, with an RRP of £3.49.

With two-thirds of British consumers now acknowledging that a healthy breakfast is vital for a good start to the day and health-motivated breakfast choices up 3.3% year on year, retailers need to consider whether they are stocking the right products to meet this demand. This on-going change in breakfast habits is further evidenced by the fact that all of the top ten cereal brands have seen volume slides in the last year. Spelt is an ancient grain with a 7,000-year history and has experienced a major resurgence in popularity as a nutritious, nutty-flavoured alternative to modern wheat. This is because it offers benefits like improved heart health, digestion, and blood sugar control due to its high fibre, protein, vitamins (B), and minerals (iron, magnesium, zinc) content.

Carmen Ferguson, Brand Manager at Biona’s parent company Windmill Organics, comments; “As many consumers are re-evaluating their breakfast choices and ignoring some of the more highly processed and overly sweet traditional breakfast items in favour of products which are more natural, organic and healthy, we’re delighted to introduce this new range of spelt cereals which offer a healthy, natural and UPF-free start to the day.”
