GT – What’s the most exciting thing about your job?

I get to drink some of the best drinks in the country, visit some of the best bars and restaurants and meet with some incredibly creative and interesting people. It’s honestly a brilliant job.

Jon Chadwick, Owner of Durham Distillery

GT – Who’s inspired you most in your career?

I would say my kids have inspired me most in my career. I wanted to do something that will be long-lasting so they can look back and see how far we have come. I hope that one day they will want to be part of the business and continue our work.

GT – If you were an item in a supermarket, what would you be?

Fine gin! If not gin then probably blue cheese.

GT – If you had to do it all over again, what would you do different?

Nothing. Make your decisions and stick to them.

GT –What’s the most embarrassing thing that’s ever happened to you at work?

Split my trousers trying to do yoga.

GT –Who or what makes you laugh?

Old comedy shows, Steptoe and Son or Tony Hancock.

GT – Do you have any hidden talents?

Yes, I can play the trumpet and am currently learning Japanese at Durham University before going on holiday to the country this summer.

GT –Who would be your favourite party guest?

I have a few – Kenneth Williams (for the wit), Andy Warhol (for the style), Ray Davis (great songwriter and raconteur), and my wife.

GT –What is the greatest luxury in your life?

Having the freedom to do what I want!

GT –What is your favourite guilty pleasure?

Afternoon naps.

GT – Do you have any secret ambitions?

To be Prime Minister. Not sure that’s a secret though?

GT –What’s your dream holiday destination?

I love to travel and have visited some fantastic places over the years. I am planning a trip to Japan this summer which I am looking forward to.

GT –What are your three favourite movies of all time?

Get Carter, Margin Call and Hanabi.

GT –What is your favourite book of all time?

Guns, Germs and Steel by Jared Diamond.

GT – What’s your favourite pastime?

Eating out in nice restaurants. Or maybe reading the paper over a quiet pint.

GT – If you won the Lottery, what would you do?

Exactly the same as I do now, but with more expensive suits.

GT – What would be your advice to someone thinking about coming into this industry (apart from “don’t do it”)?

Be brave enough to do your own thing and certainly don’t copy anyone else.
