The American Single Malt category may be newly ratified in the US, but one producer has been quietly defining its direction for over a decade. Now, Virginia Distillery Company – the most awarded producer in the category – has launched in the UK, distributed by Maverick Drinks.
Founded in 2011 by the late George Moore, an Irish entrepreneur inspired by his love of single malt Scotch, the distillery was built in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Lovingston, Virginia. Today, under the leadership of his son Gareth Moore, the business has established itself as a founding member of the American Single Malt Commission and a key architect of the category’s global identity.
At its core, Virginia Distillery Company operates within a recognisable single malt framework: 100% malted barley, copper pot stills and maturation in oak. The divergence comes from place.
Virginia’s humid, highly variable climate — often compared to Taiwan — creates significant seasonal temperature swings, accelerating interaction between spirit and cask. The result is a whisky that develops depth and structure at a comparatively younger age, while retaining the textural clarity associated with traditional single malt production. Notably, the distillery releases nothing younger than five years old.
Cask management sits at the centre of the house style. The portfolio is split across two complementary ranges.
The Virginia Distillery Company (VDC) line focuses on secondary maturation. Whiskies are typically aged for five to six years in ex-bourbon barrels before being transferred into finishing casks, including Port, Cabernet Sauvignon, sherry, cider and STR European red wine casks. Bottled at 46.5% ABV, non-chill filtered and natural in colour, the range delivers a fruit-led, spice-driven profile shaped as much by finishing as by climate.
Alongside this sits Courage & Conviction, first released in 2020. Here, new make spirit is filled directly into its final cask for primary maturation, with part of the stock managed via a solera-style system to ensure consistency. Matured for a minimum of six years, the range spans Bourbon, Sherry and Cuvée casks, alongside the Signature Malt — a marriage of bourbon, STR red wine and multiple sherry styles.
For UK buyers and bartenders, the arrival of Virginia Distillery Company offers both category relevance and stylistic distinction: single malt made to familiar production standards, but shaped by a markedly different climate and an assertive, finishing-led philosophy.
The range is available now in the UK for the on and off-trade via Maverick Drinks.
