The waterfront store is being built on the corner of Dock Road and Duke Street, next to the 500 apartments at Peel Waters’ award-winning Millers Quay development, which is now fully occupied. It is also within walking distance of residents living at East Float Quay apartments and Redbridge Quay and will provide new jobs for the community.

The 4,300 sq ft store will feature a carefully curated selection of Sainsbury’s great value, high-quality food and other convenience products. Open daily between 7am and 11pm, the store will provide everything from bread and pastries baked daily in-store to delicious fruit and veg, meat, fish and meal solutions, offering local customers more convenience and choice. Other features will include a free cash machine and a collection point for customers to order and collect from Argos, Tu clothing and Habitat.

Sainsbury’s will sit at the heart of this regenerated brownfield residential area, providing a convenient, walkable amenity for the thousands of residents now living nearby, as well as for the growing business community at Wirral Waters. It will be accessible to pedestrians from the quayside walkway.

In keeping with Wirral Waters’ environmental credentials, a number of sustainability measures will be included. It will be powered by 100% renewable electricity and will feature 100% LED lighting throughout. As an extension of the Millers Quay site, students from Wirral Met College will be engaged in the construction of this important local amenity.

Base Build Services has been appointed as the contractor to build the new store, which is due to open summer 2026.

Richard Mawdsley, Director of Development at Wirral Waters, said: “We’re really pleased to celebrate the start of this build as it will bring an important amenity and new jobs to the heart of this brand-new neighbourhood.

“Successful brownfield regeneration is about creating places and communities where people want to live, work, and visit and a walkable, high-quality convenience store is a vital part of that offer.

“By working closely with Sainsbury’s, we have also been able to ensure that the store will align with our high standards of sustainability, and that we can involve construction students from Wirral Met College, as they have been throughout the construction of Millers Quay. I am looking forward to seeing this new store come to life over the coming months.”

Cllr Paula Basnett, Leader of Wirral Council, said: “It’s fantastic to see yet more investment coming into Wirral Waters, bringing new services and amenities right into the heart of this growing neighbourhood. Developments like this play a huge role in building vibrant, connected communities, where people have what they need on their doorstep. This new store will support local residents and businesses, create new jobs, and add to the real sense of confidence and momentum we’re seeing across Wirral. It’s another clear sign of turning our plans into reality, driving long term economic growth, building better places for our people and shaping a brighter future for our borough.”
