Asda is bringing back its “Winter Fruit and Veg pledge” and will once again donate the equivalent of one million meals at the start of this year, as part of its partnership with FareShare and the Coronation Food Project.
Following the success of last year’s initiative, Asda’s pledge will see over 420 tonnes of fresh fruit and vegetables donated to the UK’s leading food redistribution charity over the next 12 weeks.
A variety of fruit & vegetables will be donated as part of the project*, grapes, citrus, apples, tomatoes, lettuce, sweet potatoes, onions, potatoes, butternut squash, ginger, chillies, parsnips, sprouts.
The return of the donation will ensure FareShare’s nationwide network of over 8,000 charities and community groups are well-supported with fruit and vegetables. These groups include afterschool and breakfast clubs, homelessness shelters, and older people’s lunch clubs, all working to provide essential support services alongside meals and food support.
The donations will be provided via Asda’s wholly owned subsidiary IPL, and with many families feeling the pinch and household budgets constrained, this contribution will help FareShare to meet even higher demand during the winter months.
Rowena White Produce Commercial Director at Asda, said: “The colder months bring added pressure for families facing food poverty in the UK, so by bringing back this initiative, we can continue to make a real difference to vulnerable communities.
“We’re proud to continue our long-standing partnership with FareShare, which has seen Asda redistribute the equivalent of 10 million meals through IPL since 2011, ensuring that redistributed food reaches the people who need it most.”
Kris Gibbon-Walsh, Deputy CEO of FareShare and The Felix Project, says: “We are enormously grateful to everyone at Asda for their ongoing support. Ensuring people and communities have access to a good supply of fruit and vegetables is a big part of our mission. Charities receiving food from FareShare tell us they appreciate the variety of fruit and veg we provide. Across our network of over 8,000 local charities, fresh produce features in nourishing meals for older people struggling with loneliness, alongside hot dinners for people experiencing homelessness and as nutritious snacks for children in out of school clubs. Produce distributed through the Winter Fruit & Veg Pledge will go a long way to helping people and communities across the UK access healthy, nutritious food. Thank you.”
The Winter Veg Pledge was launched by Asda and IPL in 2025 and is returning for its second year.IPL have recently celebrated a major milestone, with the redistribution of the equivalent of 10 million meals and 4000 tonnes of surplus products to FareShare.
FareShare’s network of charities and community groups continue to receive surplus food from Asda’s stores and depots, ensuring good food avoids going to waste and reaches those who need it most.
The donations have been made possible by redirecting surplus ingredients directly from producers within the Asda and IPL supply chain.
