Asda Opticians has announced a £2.5 million investment programme and two senior leadership appointments as part of its 2026 strategy, unveiled at its annual conference this month.
The investment will support the continued development of Asda’s optical estate, enhance clinical services, and strengthen colleague training and progression opportunities across the business.
Key elements of the £2.5m investment include:
- Refitting 18 Optical units, modernising facilities and improving clinical environments for both colleagues and patients.
- Upgrades to diagnostic equipment, including expanded access to Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) and new pre test technology to support earlier detection of eye conditions and improve clinical decision making.
- A new suite of technical, leadership and personal development training will also be introduced for Optical colleagues, that aims to refresh their knowledge and strengthen their confidence when dealing with customers and new products.
- Continued development of the Level 6 Dispensing Optician apprenticeship, with a third cohort beginning in September 2026 and plans to double the organisation’s 2026 Pre Reg intake.
Alongside the investment, Asda confirmed two leadership changes within its Optical business. Joe Huntford has been appointed Head of Optical, bringing multi-site retail experience and three years within Asda’s Field Operations team. Peena Govind has been appointed Superintendent Optometrist, following 18 months as Deputy Superintendent and nearly 20 years in the industry. Peena will lead professional standards and clinical excellence across the estate.
Joe Huntford, Head of Optical at Asda Opticians, said: “This year’s event was about looking ahead – celebrating the strengths of our optical community, while setting clear ambitions for the future. Asda Opticians has a clear strategy to continue growing, and through our continued investment in our facilities and colleague development, our focus remains on delivering accessible, high quality, great value eye care for every patient who walks through our doors.”-quality, great-value eye care for every patient who walks through our doors.”
