Results from the National Farmers Union Scotland (NFUS) annual ShelfWatch Report revealed that 65% of the retailer’s own label fresh produce was Scottish

New research has confirmed Aldi as the biggest stockist of Scottish produce.

The announcement comes from the National Farmers Union Scotland (NFUS) 2025-26 ShelfWatch report, released today (Friday 27 February).

Conducted on behalf of farmers and crofters, the most recent audit covered 78 stores across Scotland. Aldi, Lidl, Co-op, Marks & Spencer, Morrisons, Tesco, Asda and Sainsbury’s were all visited, with over 20,000 own-label products assessed.

Over the last year, the results show that Aldi has continuously had the largest percentage of fresh Scottish produce overall, with an average of 65%, significantly above the 26% average across the major UK retailers in Scotland.

Aldi was found to stock 100% Scottish potatoes, 100% Scottish eggs and 100% Scottish cream, and was also noted as a strong supporter of Scottish chicken (82% average). Aldi’s Scottish pork sourcing was also among the highest, at 41%. As the only retailer to list fresh primary Scottish pork, it is further evidence of its ongoing support for the Scottish pig industry amid sector challenges.

The report also showed notable improvement in Scottish lamb sourcing, with Aldi increasing its Scotch lamb offering by 43 percentage points, to 81%.

Alan Leslie, Buying Director, Aldi Scotland, said: “Scotland’s larder is world-renowned, and we take great pride in championing Scottish sourcing at Aldi. Our dedicated Scottish buying team has supported local farmers and producers since 2009, helping us bring the freshest, top-quality products to our stores.

“Being recognised once again as Scotland’s leading supermarket for Scottish produce reflects our continuous progress, but we know there’s more to do. We remain committed to increasing the proportion of locally sourced products and working closely with Scottish suppliers to ensure our customers continue to enjoy the very best of Scotland.”

Andrew Connon, NFU Scotland President, said: “We continue to value Aldi’s engagement and commitment to Scottish produce, we hope it sets the standard for others to follow. The 2025–26 ShelfWatch report shows strong results for Aldi, excelling in Scottish vegetables, potatoes and creams. Notably they are steadfast in the support for Scotch Lamb up 43% versus last year, a category where others have struggled and continued leadership in Scottish Pork. This demonstrates the real impact when retailers actively support Scottish farmers and crofters. ShelfWatch gives invaluable, data-driven insight into sourcing and labelling practices, helping ensure that local producers, consumers, and the wider Scottish economy all benefit.”
