A family-run Aberdeenshire bakery is meeting Scotland’s appetite for morning rolls, selling over 20,000 of its much-loved rolls every day through Aldi stores nationwide.
Murdoch Allan, established over 30 years ago, has been at the heart of Scottish baking for three generations. Led by managing director Paul Allan, the bakery crafts everything from soft morning rolls to nostalgic Yum Yums and Danish pastries, using techniques that have stood the test of time.
But it’s the humble morning roll that has captured shoppers’ hearts – with a staggering 150,000 sold every week, making it one of Aldi’s bestselling Scottish bakery products.
The baker, which began its relationship with Aldi in 2023, credits the partnership for transforming the family business. Launching with just two products, Murdoch Allan now supplies 12 lines across Aldi’s 109 Scottish stores. The success has led to more jobs, higher turnover – now sitting at £10m – and new customers discovering the Murdoch Allan baked treats.
Paul Allan, Managing Director of Murdoch Allan, said: “Baking is our family legacy and I’m proud to be the third generation carrying on what my grandfather started.
“Our focus has always been on craft, quality and tradition, and it’s fantastic to see those values resonate with Aldi customers. To go from two products to 12 in just over a year is incredible, and baking over 20,000 rolls a day is something we could never have imagined without Aldi’s support.”
Aldi Scotland, which champions more than 90 local suppliers, says Murdoch Allan is a perfect example of how small family firms can grow through partnership.
Graham Nicolson, Group Buying Director, Aldi Scotland, said: “Murdoch Allan’s traditional rolls and cakes have quickly become customer favourites. They represent everything that makes Scottish food special – heritage, quality, and great taste.
“We’re proud to support Paul and his team, and we look forward to bringing even more of their fantastic products to Aldi shelves in the future.”
Murdoch Allan’s journey is far from over with plans to expand its range further, the bakery hopes to bring even more of its craft creations to Scots.
