One of Newcastle’s oldest and best-known bakeries is bringing its legendary Stotties to Tesco customers across North East England.
The new range, which has just launched in 18 Tesco Superstores and Extras, includes the famous Geordie Bakers Stotties in two sizes, as well as their handcrafted white and brown soft rolls.
A Stottie is a regional favourite bread across Northern England, particularly on Tyneside. Unlike other breads, Stotties are baked directly on the stone based oven after a single rise, which gives them a tight crumb with a chewy texture that makes them unique.
Geordie Bakers, which started life in 1956 as Thomsons Bakery, has grown to become one of the region’s best-known bakeries, using traditional techniques and locally-sourced ingredients to produce high-quality breads, cakes, biscuits and savouries 365 days a year.
Bethany Auger, Buying Manager – England & Isle of Man said:
“We’re committed to supporting local producers such as Geordie Bakers and bringing their amazing ranges into Tesco stores. Customers in the North East told us that they wanted to see authentic, locally-baked Stotties in their stores, and Geordie Bakers, with their reputation for quality and using traditional baking techniques were the ideal partner to make it happen. We’re excited to what customers think of the new range.”
Jonny Liddicoat, Managing Director at Geordie Bakers, said:
“Nothing symbolises our North East connection more than our Solebaked Stottie which is a true Geordie classic and part of the region’s food heritage. So, we’re delighted to be bringing them to Tesco customers across the North East.
“We’re passionate about the region’s food heritage so we still bake our bread in the traditional way, staying true to original baking methods and combining craftsmanship with the quality and consistency of a modern bakery.”
