Femu Trade is calling on UK retailers to take a bigger bite of the mochi opportunity, with listings in more than 1000 UK stores, delivering strong rotation across the 10 SKU range.
Albert Heijn in the Netherlands has added significant momentum to Royal Family Mochi’s European expansion, with the brand securing listings across 90% of the retailer’s store estate. This major retail achievement brings the traditional Japanese sweet cake into another mainstream grocery chain, significantly expanding its accessibility to consumers, with further European grocery launches expected soon.
The opportunity extends beyond current listings. PW Consulting estimates the global mochi market was worth $1.2bn in 2025 and forecasts it will reach almost $2b by 2032, with Europe already accounting for more than $216m in sales.
Royal Family, the world’s largest manufacturer of shelf-stable mochi according to NIQ 2024, brings established international scale to that opportunity. The range is distributed in more than 70 countries and backed by over 30 years of specialist mochi development. The business also operates one of the largest mochi museums in the World where tourists can visit and learn to make the treat themselves.
For UK retailers, the proposition is straightforward: A consumer favourite made famous in the freezer can now be added to the ambient aisle in shelf ready packaging and is zero-rated for VAT. The vegan, gluten-free ambient range spans ten flavours in 120g sharing bags and five in 40g bar formats, covering sharing, trial and on-the-go occasions.
The core range of Chocolate, Salted Caramel, Creamy Matcha Latte and Strawberry Cheesecake are flavours every UK consumer understands and they have been paired with mochi’s distinctive soft, chewy texture to create something truly unique.
Ibrahim Sidat, Managing Director of Femu Trade, said: “Retailers need innovation that earns its shelf space and is truly incremental. The Royal Family mochi gives them a distinctive product with real UK sales data behind it, in formats that fit existing snacking and impulse fixtures. For wholesale, the next step is to make the range accessible to more independent retailers to take advantage of the opportunity”.
