Cash handling specialist Volumatic is urging retailers to maintain payment choice for shoppers as new research from travel money retailer No1 Currency suggests UK consumers , particularly younger generations, are increasingly turning back to cash to help manage spending.

The research highlights a growing trend towards “cash-only” spending periods, particularly at weekends, with consumers withdrawing a fixed amount of money and relying solely on cash until Monday to help avoid overspending.

The trend follows the rise of “cash stuffing”, where consumers allocate physical cash into separate envelopes for categories such as bills, travel and leisure spending.

Alongside helping consumers better manage spending, cash continues to offer additional benefits including privacy, inclusivity and protection during banking or IT outages – something becoming increasingly important as retailers continue to face rising levels of payment disruption and cyber security threats.

Research from Raconteur found that 81% of retailers experience POS downtime at least once a year, while cyber attacks on retailers rose by more than 74% in 2025.

Volumatic, which has specialised in cash handling solutions for more than 50 years, works with major retail and leisure businesses including Tesco, Co-op, Morrisons, Halfords, Dobbies, Subway, Odeon Cinemas and Card Factory to help improve cash security, efficiency and cash management at point of sale.

Its portfolio includes counterfeit detection technology, secure cash deposit devices and intelligent cash management software designed to help retailers reduce shrinkage, improve operational efficiency and lower cash handling costs while continuing to offer customers their preferred payment methods.

Volumatic Managing Director, James Harris, said: “Cash is resurgent and year after year we are seeing it being embraced more and more across all demographics, particularly Generation Z and Baby Boomers.

“It’s important for all businesses right now to carefully consider the payment methods your business is happy to accept, think about the impact on your customer base and Volumatic is here to help reduce your cash handling costs. You might be surprised at how easy our solutions make things and how much money we can save you.”
