- A reimagination of the classic Black Forest dessert flavour in response to growing demand for sweet, nostalgic flavours
Edinburgh Gin, from independent family-owned, Ian Macleod Distillers, introduces to its festive range a Black Forest Gateau Liqueur. This 20% ABV liqueur fuses the brand’s award-winning Classic Gin with rich, dark berries to deliver a sweet, tangy profile reminiscent of the iconic Black Forest dessert.
Launching in time for the festive season, this liqueur taps into consumer trends for lower-alcohol options, seasonal indulgence and sweet nostalgic flavours[1]. Edinburgh Gin Black Forest Gateau Liqueur will be available in Tesco stores nationwide from 28th September.
“Christmas is a key sales period for liqueurs, and our new Black Forest flavour hits all the right notes in flavour and ABV,” says Ella Christie-McCord, Brand Manager at Edinburgh Gin. “Combining nostalgic flavour with a contemporary edge, it offers a taste profile that feels both familiar and fresh, making it the perfect pick for celebrations or as a thoughtful Christmas gift.”
The launch follows consumer research that revealed that liqueurs are most commonly enjoyed at events, as self-treats and for gifting[2]. 73% purchase liqueurs year-round[3] with sales in the run-up to Christmas increasing 78%[4], and 52% of consumers are moderating alcohol intake[5].
With a 20% ABV, the Black Forest Gateau Liqueur meets the demand for moderation-friendly drinks while remaining versatile – enjoyed over ice, in cocktails or as a festive spritz. In fact, with spritzes like the Hugo Spritz, booming (Google searches up 172% over summer), 72% of Brits now say they enjoy a winter spritz made with liqueur, prosecco, and sparkling water[6].
Also new this festive season is an upgrade on the limited-edition Christmas Edinburgh Dry Gin. A delicious blend of nutmeg, cinnamon, and clove for a warm spiced base, balanced with gentle citrus notes of clementine and mandarin peel, the style is presented in refreshed premium packaging, perfectly capturing the spirit of the season.
The two new launches build on strong momentum for Edinburgh Gin London Dry which saw sales value surpass £2m in 2024 and all three leading SKU’s, including Christmas Gin, outperforming the total London Dry category[7].
