Welcome to the September issue of Wholesale Manager. UK shoppers spent £3.6bn on groceries at convenience stores in the last four weeks ending 13th August, with the channel accounting for 28.9% of sales within this period, reveals new data, released by NielsenIQ. NielsenIQ data reveals that over the four week period, total till grocery sales remained strong, with a growth of +4.5%. However, this was exceeded by growth of sales at convenience stores, which rose +5.4%.

The award winning retail initiative, Plan for Profit, will shortly be launching a brand new product check tool to help independent retailers prepare for the new High Fat Sugar & Salt (HFSS) legislation coming into effect from this autumn. From October 2022, the Government is introducing new regulations that will affect thousands of independent retailers firstly in England. The intention is to reduce the availability of products high in fat, sugar and salt through implementing restrictions around promotion and placement in convenience stores.

Thousands of vaping products face being shut out of the British retail market if producers fail to seek comprehensive validation as required by the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA). Compliance submissions for vape products originally accepted as correct by the European Common Entry Gateway (EUCEG) may now not be enough, so manufacturers need to check that they have listed all necessary components. The warning comes from Lee Bryan, managing director of Arcus Compliance Ltd, leading advisers to the vaping industry and many of its biggest brands.

On the occasion of Her Majesty’s 96th birthday, Wanis International Foods received a Queen’s Award for Enterprise for International Trade. A family business founded nearly six decades ago, when Queen Elizabeth was in her mid-thirties, Wanis was recognised for five years of uninterrupted growth and commended for its commitment to equality and diversity. New research has revealed that 16 per cent of Brits don’t recycle, with a lack of knowledge about what can and can’t be recycled cited as the most common reason. A new poll of 2,000 adults found that a third (34 per cent) believe recycling is unnecessarily complicated, whilst 45 per cent think that simplicity would be the most important aspect if the recycling system were to be redesigned. In fact, recent figures from DEFRA show that the amount of household waste recycled in England fell by 1.5 per cent in 2020 to 44 per cent, 6 per cent below the EU minimum target of 50 per cent, according to our Special Report.
