allplants takes up their beef with the ultra processed food industry.

A survey commissioned by allplants found that 70% of Brits worry about hidden nasties in their food, 87% think ready meals should be healthier, and over half of adults think the Government should introduce legislation for ready meals to only contain wholefoods*. allplants is calling out players in the ultra-processed food market and showing shoppers that ready meals can be both healthy, equally exciting and full of flavour.

Diet trends have taken over Western society headlines for decades, with new scientists and experts constantly reinventing claims on the healthiest ways to eat, from cutting out entire food groups to relying on supplements and powder instead of good nutrition.

With the rising interest and research into gut health, more and more studies are showing that having a healthy diet isn’t actually all that complicated, but instead, comes down to prioritising a whole foods approach over ultra processed foods.

That’s why allplants, the plant-based food brand on a mission to inspire the planet to eat more plants, is taking a stance, to break the industry free from ultra processed foods with wholefood plant power; delicious, nutritionally packed food should be the rule, not the exception.

Ultra-processed foods are “made mostly or entirely from substances derived from foods and additives,” write the authors of a 2017 commentary published in the journal Public Health Nutrition. These additives are ingredients not usually used in home cooking, like preservatives, dyes, and non-sugar sweeteners. This not only includes typical junk food, but often brands consumers perceive to be healthy, and in reality contain a long list of unfamiliar ingredients.

Ultra-processed foods are defined by the types of ingredients they contain, and they tend to be junk food: low in fibre and high in sugar. Studies have linked eating ultra-processed foods to a number of health risks, including increases in obesity, high blood pressure, Type 2 diabetes and even dementia.

Tim Spector, a professor in genetic epidemiology at King’s College London and author of Food for Life: The New Science of Eating Well, has been making headlines for his research into the link between gut health and nutrition. His whole philosophy for better health is based on eating more plant-based foods and avoiding ultra-processed items. Based on his extensive research, he claims: ‘the single most important dietary factor we found for better gut health was the number of different plants we eat weekly, with 30 a week being the optimal number’. This is key to having a balance of ‘good’ bacteria in the biome, which in turn helps all facets of your health, including helping to fight disease and infection, as well as properly digesting food and absorbing nutrients and energy.

Prioritising a varied diet rich in whole foods still has an unhealthy association with ‘clean eating’; which people assume means boring, plain and restrictive. allplants is proving this isn’t the case, and shows the UK that plant-based eating can be exciting and flavoursome.

Each allplants meal is balanced by a nutritionist, contains at least 2 of your 5 a day and is cooked up in allplants’ own kitchen in North London with a team of over 100 innovative chefs – filled with wholefoods and putting plants at the centre of your plate, it’s a far cry from your conventional frozen ready meal. Flash freezing the meals removes the need to add preservatives; the meals are packed with wholefoods and veg, only ingredients you’d know and recognise.

Founder Jonathan Petrides says, ‘allplants has always been about championing plants, ever since we started in our North London kitchen in 2017 – and that’s never going to change. We’ve always thought it was mad that so many companies are putting chemicals into our bodies, and no one is saying anything about it. allplants is now taking the brave step to be loud about the change we expect to see from the food industry, and we’re ready to lead this change.’

Their menu of 100+ dishes proves that packing in a variety of plants doesn’t have to look boring, including:
