Originally part of the Rannoch Food Group, Cucina Sano – Italian for ‘Healthy Kitchen’ – was acquired by the Icelandic-owned Bakkavor Group in 2007. The Boston, Lincolnshire site manufactures a range of high-quality salads, deli products and ready meals with a predominantly Italian theme.
Bakkavor Cucina Sano recently took on new business for a range of Italian ready meals, including lasagnes, for Marks & Spencer. The company manufactures these products on a high-speed line delivering upwards of 40 packs per minute, and needed a reliable tray sealing system as part of the operation.
The site already uses Proseal equipment and found it to be reliable and effective, so Bakkavor Cucina Sano asked Proseal for an appropriate solution. While speed was essential, another critical factor was user-friendliness, as around 72% of the factory’s labour force consists of Eastern European migrant workers.
Proseal proposed the use of its fully automatic GT1 tray sealer, specifically developed for demanding food production environments. The GT1’s intelligent film feed systems provides enhanced control for excellent seal quality at high throughput speeds, while Proseal’s pioneering Auto-Tool enables tool changes to be carried out in around two minutes.
The innovative Touch Screen Control user interface delivers a graphic-based operating system that ensures fast, intuitive retrieval of all recipe settings from the database.
Bakkavor Cucina Sano has installed two GT1s, complemented by Proseal’s OC Intelligent Filling conveyor for fast, efficient delivery of packs for tray sealing.
Martin Murray, Factory Manager at Bakkavor Cucina Sano, confirms that “The machines have maintained their excellent performance since installation, even when running more than 12 hours per day. In addition, the image-based menus on the GT1’s Touch Screen Control make training and operation fast and easy for all of our workforce.”
