In the highly competitive temperature controlled logistics market, staying ahead of the competition requires continual attention to technology and quality management.
That's why Peter Green Haulage Ltd gained BRC certification in Storage and Distribution in May 2007. Certification demonstrates the company's commitment to the continued pursuit of the highest standards in the market.
About Peter Green Haulage Ltd
For over 40 years, Peter Green Haulage Ltd. has specialised in consolidating and delivering chilled temperature-controlled products such as dairy, chilled desserts and ready meals, into major retailers' depots, food-service and catering outlets.
Typically, Peter Green Haulage Ltd handles 300,000 cases per week, across 5,000 separate consignments. Product remains for 10 days in a chilled, 100,000 square foot warehouse, capable of holding a total of 6,500 pallets of customers' product.
Customers include brands such as BabyBel, Wyke Farms, Farmhouse Fare, So Good, Wensleydale, Fiorucci and Duchy Originals.
How their customers gain from the standard
By achieving the BRC standard, the Somerset-based company reassures its customers that their product reaches the customer through a temperature-controlled supply chain in consistently good condition.
As a result, retailers receive fewer customer complaints and they feel more confident in doing business with their suppliers.
"BRC is the most applicable standard for our industry," says Tom Binks, Director of Peter Green Haulage Ltd. "It is the most in-demand standard for our customers."
The advantages of choosing SGS United Kingdom Ltd for BRC certification
To achieve certified status, the company took advantage of a long-standing relationship with SGS.
Having worked with Peter Green Haulage Ltd. to help them achieve their ISO 9000, the SGS project team already know a good deal about the temperature-controlled logistics business. What's more, SGS trained many of the company's Quality Management team in their previous jobs. And since the audit, SGS continues to add value by supporting the quality management process wherever possible. "SGS are very helpful. They continue to stay in touch regularly and offer good advice," says Binks.
SGS are members of the BRC recognition panel
By choosing SGS to audit to the BRC standard, Peter Green Haulage Ltd can be sure of the guarantee that their products satisfy the requirements of the Global Standard for Storage and Distribution.
SGS have signed a contract with BRC and are on the BRC recognition panel of certifying bodies offering certification to the new standard.
A straightforward audit process
Thanks to the long-standing relationship between the companies and the understanding SGS auditors have built up of the company's business, the BRC audit took one day to complete, without disruption to business. SGS auditors spent time with senior managers, asking for proof and documentation of all documented processes.
"They were very thorough - checking documentation and talking to operators who were expected to have their own documentation up to date."
The company was certified to BRC in May 2007, and as a result plans more PR to attract more business in the future.
The standard keeps the company ahead of competitors
In addition to delivering benefits to customers and suppliers, achieving the standard differentiates Peter Green from competitors. Many of the company's competitors simply don't have the certificate at present.
"Certification will demonstrate that we are continuing to stay at the forefront of everything we do in temperature-controlled logistics," says Binks, "especially in the key area of technology and quality management."
