Retailers in the Westfield Shopping Mall in Stratford are using cutting edge communications equipment to reduce costs, improve customer service and safety and increase sales.

Edgware-based communications specialist Call Systems Technology (CST) works with leading grocery retailer ASDA and other famous names. At Westfield, CST’s customers include John Lewis, Mothercare, Dorothy Perkins and Burton.

“Westfield represents a great opportunity for retailers to implement new technologies that increase staff effectiveness and enhance their business operations,” says Bruce McNair, sales director at CST. “These systems offer significant benefits to large stores and to grocery retailers.

“For example, the Westfield John Lewis is the first store in the UK to use a new digital radio with multi channels and multi groups. It radically improves communications between business protection teams, departments and departmental managers and is an ideal communications solution for larger stores and supermarkets.”

CST supplied Quail Digital hands-free headsets to another of the Westfield stores. “The Quail Digital system improves communications between all team members, including stock room, floor staff and managers,” says Bruce McNair. “Several hours can be saved each week because stock checking is so much easier!  Customer service is better and faster too and the headsets also improve communication during security incidents, reducing shrinkage through vandalism and theft.”

The clarity of the lightweight headsets’ audio signal ensures that messages get heard, no matter how noisy the store and they are unobtrusive, robust, comfortable to wear and easy to use.

Another innovative installation, at one Westfield retailer, solves the issue of false fire alarms that lead to unnecessary store evacuations. CST’s AlarmCall system connects directly to the site’s fire alarm and in the event of an alarm triggering, immediately notifies the store’s fire team telling them the exact location of the relevant sensor. Fire team members can quickly check and stand down the alarm before the automatic fire service call-out, if the alarm is found to be false.

“False fire alarm evacuations can cost stores tens of thousands of pounds in lost sales, not to mention the safety issues and inconvenience to customers. AlarmCall was developed in conjunction with ASDA and the Manchester Fire Service to provide a safe, sure solution,” explains McNair.

CST will be exhibiting at the Retail Technology Business Expo on 13 & 14 March in Earl’s Court, London where CST staff are giving two brief presentations in the Expo’s ‘Peta Kucha’ theatre.
