Thanet Earth, based on the Isle of Thanet in Kent, boasts the largest most high-tech greenhouse complex in the UK with enough glass to cover 80 football pitches for growing tomatoes, peppers and cucumbers with exceptional green credentials, and as part of a continuous efficiency improvement programme consulted UPM Conveyors to automate the transfer of cheery tomatoes from an Ilapak Vegatronic 500 bagger to the check weigher/ labelling/packing area, at a rate of 70 packs per minute.
UPM Conveyors evaluated various options and decided the ideal solution to transfer packs from the 100mm high discharge height from the bagger was via a horizontal feed section to elevate to a height of 1100mm through a 90 degree radius to the check weigher in one belt conveyor utilising High Molecular Weight Polyethylene (HMWPE) construction which is FDA approved for food contact but also very aesthetically pleasing as seen in the photograph.
UPM also offer conventional stainless steel belt conveyors, but HMWPE is becoming more recognised in the food processing/packaging sector as a lower cost alternative allowing greater flexibility in design plus complying with full wash down hygiene regulations..
