thermo-logo.jpgBelgium – As South America’s fresh and frozen export market continues to grow (it’s more than doubled during the past seven years), so does the need for dependable transport refrigeration technology. Thermo King has answered that need with products like the MAGNUM® container reefer, AFAM+ (Advanced Fresh Air Management System), and a genset product line that protect fresh and frozen commodities – and the environment -for the long haul. To ensure a market’s success, it takes more than simply providing the equipment and technology.

It takes service providers and technician training. Thermo King has grown its service providers by 10 percent per year over the last five years in South America alone due to its market growth and demand. And training sessions, orchestrated through the Thermo King Learning Center, are an on-going initiative.

“Our Learning Center offers the most complete transport temperature control technician training available,” said Gino Ansaldi, Sales & Service Manager, South America. “Classes first began in 1949, and since then, the Learning Center’s facilities and curriculum has evolved alongside the cutting-edge technology Thermo King has pioneered.”

Under the direction of area service managers like Ansaldi, Thermo King is able to meet the education and training needs of the marine container industry. The 2008 Marine Solutions program includes courses for journeyman level technicians with the primary objective of providing technicians with the knowledge and skills necessary for diagnosing, repairing and maintaining today’s marine container temperature control systems and power generation equipment.

The most recent South American global training course for technicians was held in Valparaiso, Chile at the Sitrans Training Center. More than 25 technicians from various service agencies and customer shops participated in the three-day Update & Diagnostics course that focused on technological changes in electrical and refrigeration systems, and generator set service, maintenance and diagnostic procedures. “MAGNUM with AFAM+ and the new SG-3000 genset were the emphasis,” said Ansaldi, who conducted the training with Rafael Gonzalez, Field Service Manager.

Thermo King also held a customer-focused training course recently in Santos, Brazil. Aimed at commercial, customer service, operational and logistics personnel from various shipping lines, the course focused on the basics of refrigeration. “The shipping lines’ reefer business is growing quickly, and this course is a great way for new employees in the various areas to learn refrigeration principles and equipment features and benefits such as the MAGNUM’s -35°C capabilities and AFAM+ technology’s ability to manage produce respiration,” explained Ansaldi.

“Both technician and customer trainings such as these are imperative to any market, but especially South America where shipping lines have reefer operations for frozen and fresh specialty products that are being shipped all around the world. “Thermo King understands that equipment – and the correct operation of that equipment – is critical to achieve the customer’s commitments,” continued Ansaldi. “Our goal is to fully arm our customers with the technology, knowledge and skills necessary to succeed.”
