The Edrington Group’s supplier awards are in their fourth consecutive year and twenty-one of its packaging suppliers were entered into this year’s competition. Founded in 1861, the Edrington Group produces many of the world’s best-known single malt and blended Scotch whisky brands. These include The Macallan and The Famous Grouse. The Group has a turnover of £553m and employs over 2,300 staff at its Glasgow headquarters, distilleries and overseas locations. Edrington spends around £27 million every year on packaging materials for its Scotch whisky brands.
The awards ceremony was held on May 12th 2011 in the grounds of the Macallan Distillery.
At the awards, David Donaldson, Edrington Group Director of Supply Chain commented: “This is the fourth year we have run our supplier awards process. The overall performance level has risen with seven gold awards this year, compared to only one in 2007. It is a great opportunity for supplier-customer collaboration and an event we are committed to, as part of our continuous improvement of working process.”
Overall Winner and named Packaging Supplier Of The Year was Smurfit Kappa, Tannochside. Ray Black, Sales Director; Muirgheas Griffin, Regional Director; and David Bain, Account Manager Smurfit Kappa Tannochside were delighted to receive the award of a Certificate and a mini-cask of The Macallan Cask Strength.
As part of the ceremony the entrants were taken on a VIP tour of the distillery ending with a ‘nosing’ session and competition. After this, and preceding the awards ceremony, presentations were given by Graham Hutcheon, Group Operations Director; David Donaldson, Director of Supply Chain; Andy Clist, Head of Materials Performance; and David Cox, Director of Brand Education.

The award acknowledges the hard work and effort put in to our service delivery and quality control by all of our staff. This is backed up by our ongoing investment in sustainability, with Carbon Trust Standard, FSC, PEFC and ISO 14001 certifications, delivering credible levels of sustainability and commercial performance to our customers”.
The award follows two other high-profile acknowledgements reinforcing the importance of sustainability to brand owners, and acknowledging Smurfit Kappa’s leadership on the subject. The Coca-Cola Enterprises’ 2010 Supplier Award for ‘Corporate Responsibility and Sustainability Supplier’ and Unilever’s Partner to Win, 2011 supplier awards in the ‘Winning through Sustainability’ category recognising suppliers who have helped Unilever to create competitive supply chains delivering tangible benefits to Unilever’s brands, consumers or customers.
