At the Taste of Kent Awards, which was held on 8th March 2018 at the Kent Showground, award organisers Produced in Kent made special recognition to local food impresario William Opie.

William is a prominent figure in the local Kent food industry. He is Chairman and the fourth generation member of family firm Bennett Opie Limited one of the oldest, private familyowned food companies in the UK, based in Sittingbourne, Kent.

William has been involved with Produced in Kent since its inception and was a founding member of its predecessor Kentish Fare in 1994. More recently William has been Chair of Produced in Kent, a position he held for over six years until he stepped down last year.

Stephanie Durling, Manager at Produced in Kent, said: “William has been such a driving force for the promotion and recognition of Kent food.

He was a popular, enthusiastic and very successful Chair of Produced in Kent. The Taste of Kent Awards was the perfect platform for us to recognise and personally thank him for all of the hard work that he has undertaken over the years. Although William has stood down as Chair, we are obviously very appreciative of his continuing involvement on the Board of Produced in Kent.”

William Opie added: “I was incredibly grateful yet somewhat humbled to be presented with a gift in recognition for my work with Produced in Kent.

Kent has so many wonderful, high quality food and drink producers, retailers and hospitality establishments and I was privileged to be part of a dynamic organisation like Produced in Kent.”
