CJ Lang & Son Ltd, owners and operators of SPAR Scotland, raised more than £70,000 last year for local causes and charities.
SPAR Scotland has generously donated a cheque for £6,000 to The Scarlett Fund. Scarlett Dougan was born with a rare condition called Hypoplastic Right Heart Syndrome (HRHS). This condition means that the right side of the heart is underdeveloped, meaning her body is unable to pump enough blood to her lungs.
Scarlett’s parents Nichola and Peter Dougan organised a Charity Ball at Glasgow’s Crowne Plaza, to raise funds for British Heart Foundation and Yorkhill Children’s Charity. The money raised will be used to buy new equipment and promote blood and organ donation.
Nichola Dougan said: “On behalf of The Scarlett Fund, I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for supporting this year’s Scarlett’s Ball. I am sure you will by now have heard how successful the night was. The funds will be split equally between the British Heart Foundation and Yorkhill Children’s Charity.
“This money will be used directly to not only help some of Scotland’s most sick children but also to aid research that will change the lives of people living with heart conditions. I am all too aware that none of it would be possible without your continued support. Please accept my most sincere thanks and gratitude.
“I look forward to welcoming you to another of our fundraising events next year,” she added.
The money donated from SPAR was raised through the sale of single-use carrier bags, which costs customers 2p per bag, and was then collected and donated to a local charity nominated by the relevant stores. The initiative has been in place since 2008 and has already raised more than £300,000; the money is then reinvested directly into the surrounding community.
The Scarlett Fund is just one of the 33 chosen charities across Scotland to benefit from the funds raised. Cheques will be donated to various campaigns from community groups, youth clubs, sports clubs, elderly care and specialist medical treatment throughout the year.
