Highland Farms, one of the UK’s leading processors of Scottish and Norwegian farm raised Atlantic salmon, has chosen Smurfit Kappa as its main supplier of sustainable and ethical packaging.

Cumbria based Highland Farms is an award winning producer, which promotes itself as a responsible processor – ‘sourcing its fish exclusively from sustainable farms’ and chose Smurfit Kappa as its sole supplier of packaging for its competitive edge and its unique approach to sustainability and the environment. Using Smurfit Kappa packaging means that Highland Farms can further assure its customers of the provenance of its products by featuring Smurfit Kappa’s FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) certification on all of its packaging.

Smurfit Kappa UK, a leading manufacturer of paper based packaging solutions, is the first UK manufacturer to achieve Chain of Custody (CoC) certification from the world’s top, internationally recognised certification agencies, for its entire UK corrugated and paper manufacturing capacity.

As producers of paper for use in its own manufacturing of corrugated sheet, Chain of Custody certification is highly important for Smurfit Kappa’s customers in tracking certified material through the paper, board and packaging production process – from the forest to the consumer, including all successive stages of processing, transformation, manufacturing and distribution.

Smurfit Kappa’s approach is to deliver a credible guarantee to its customers and in turn to their customers (consumers) by confirming that all packaging supplied by Smurfit Kappa UK uses materials originating from well managed forests, controlled sources, reclaimed materials, or a mixture of these.

Highland Farms will be using Smurfit Kappa FSC certified packaging for its new MacKnight’s Smoked Salmon Bacon product, which won top food service Seafood Prix d’Elite award at the 2010 European Seafood Exposition in Brussels. The product is made from Scottish Atlantic salmon cured with a special blend of rock salt, spices and maple syrup, then carefully air dried and smoked to create a rich, flavourful smoked salmon bacon.

For Highland Farms’ biggest customers, sustainability is a key part of their relationship and covers all aspects of Aquaculture (the cultivation of marine and freshwater finfish and shellfish) processing and packaging.

Ray Black, Sales Director of Smurfit Kappa Tannochside says “Since gaining FSC certification in 2010, we have seen a great deal of interest in our products, showing that our investment in environmental and sustainability awareness across our whole organisation delivers more than just a ‘feel-good’ factor. It delivers tangible sales benefits for ourselves and our customers as well.”
