linpac-allibert-logo.jpgIncreasing awareness of the environmental impact of packaging means that retailers and consumers not only demand high quality and high performance from their packaging products, but they also want reassurance that both products and packaging partners are environmentally responsible. Many companies are addressing this by creating closed loop systems that adhere to the philosophy of organisations like the Carbon Trust – reduce, reuse and recycle. This approach means that products are designed not only for their use but also for their recyclability and their second life.

The LINPAC Group is such a company, and was also one of the first within the UK packaging industry to take the unprecedented step of implementing its own stringent environmental policy. Today the global brand aims to be a leader within its sector for providing sustainable and environmentally sound products, operations and services.

Mike Arrowsmith, CEO of the LINPAC Group, says: “Our main environmental priority is to continue to use our innovation and technical knowledge to develop new products and services, which specifically address the retailers’ challenges of waste reduction within their supply chains.

“Our challenge as a packaging producer is to provide innovative packaging using fewer raw materials, less energy, and where appropriate recycled material that still retains its functionality. Likewise, by providing efficient services, and reusable products, we can help our customers reduce the amount of waste in their supply chains to ultimately help close the recycling loop.”

Maximising partnerships with the company’s other divisions is one approach LINPAC is undertaking to address their environmental impact, the effect of plastic packaging on the waste stream and their position as a responsible partner.
LINPAC Recycling and LINPAC Allibert are working hand in hand to close the recycling loop and in turn reduce plastic waste. This approach ensures constant innovation in the way that rigid plastics, like Reusable Transit Packaging (RTP), are designed, manufactured, handled and treated at the end-of-life.

Thousands of tonnes of transit packaging are disposed of every year. To combat this, LINPAC Allibert has developed reusable systems that have been designed to be easily recycled by LINPAC Recycling following a long service life – offering significant business and environmental benefits.

LINPAC Recycling offers end-of-life recycling as a commercially viable alternative to disposal. It produces recycled polymer to be re-used in the manufacture of second-generation, multi-trip containers and systems.

General Manager of LINPAC Recycling, Ian Porter, says: “LINPAC Allibert has designed its RTP packaging items specifically so that they can be recycled. This is a great example of recycling by design – a concept which LINPAC Recycling support heavily. Designing products that can be recycled, using ‘like polymers’ where possible and creating items that can be easily dismantled is the way forward.”

LINPAC Group has demonstrated the importance of linking business and environmental strategies through this partnership, which extends the useful life of rigid plastic products and minimises the effects of these plastics on the environment.
Adam Barnett, Director of Marketing, says: “Our partnership approach allows our customers to benefit from our integrated skills and capabilities that may have formerly been considered an entirely separate function.

“We offer a one-stop shop; we can provide the primary packaging through LINPAC Packaging, supply transit crates through LINPAC Allibert, track the crates with RFID technology through Intellident, wash the crates through Logtek for re-use and recycle them at the end of their life through LINPAC Recycling.”

LINPAC Recycling is the UK’s leading recycler of post-use rigid plastics, recycling more than 32,000 tonnes of material each year, which is more than LINPAC Packaging produce. It was originally formed in 1991 to recycle post-consumer polystyrene products; today the plant is highly proficient in recycling a wide range of rigid plastics, one of which is LINPAC Allibert’s RTP crates.

LINPAC Allibert is a world leader in materials handling solutions, providing products and services for returnable packaging and equipment for retail and industrial end-user sectors. LINPAC Allibert’s core strength is innovation, and its range of plastic containers typically last upwards of seven years in continuous rotation, paying for themselves many times over; and at the end of their working life they can be recycled through LINPAC Recycling – making new from old.

Through reusable containers and multi-trip systems, LINPAC Allibert is able to provide a service that reduces packaging waste, reduces transportation costs and provides protection for the product.

Laurence Tanty, Managing Director of LINPAC Allibert, says “Our partnership with LINPAC Recycling helps us to reduce our carbon footprint, as it takes less energy to recycle crates than it does to create the virgin compound used in their manufacture. Recycling RTP trays is cost effective as this eliminates disposal costs, which in turn makes our business more competitive. Environmentally we help to reduce the amount of material going to landfill and the amount of waste exported.”

“We are constantly investing in new product developments to produce reusable packaging containers that help reduce storage and distribution costs, and substantially reduce the use of one-trip packaging. Our customers appreciate us providing the complete package, including recycling. It means they have all their needs met from one supplier, providing a unique solution that is good for the environment and the bottom line.

One customer who appreciates the innovative offering from LINPAC Allibert is John Tague, from Global supply chain specialist Perkins Engines. He says: “Not only do we save money with our ability to recycle all boxes and packaging we use, but there are benefits for the environmental balance sheet, so fantastic news all round.”

Recycling RTP crates is just one of the many outputs of LINPAC Recycling. The division specialises in recycling a wide variety of plastics into a range of extraordinary and technically demanding end applications.

LINPAC Recycling supply specified quality controlled recycled compounds in PP, PE and PS into a range of key market sectors, including packaging, automotive, horticulture and construction; these are just a few of the industries that are adopting and benefiting from using recycled plastics.
