GT – What’s the most exciting thing about your job?

Meeting new prospects, learning about the challenges they have in their business as part of the sales process and securing business with them.

GT – Who’s inspired you most in your career?

I read a great book by Lee Iacocca, then chairman of Chrysler, and he had some great and subtle sales lines and techniques.

GT – If you were an item in a supermarket, what would you be?

Mustard, always keen and hopefully always able to cut it.

GT – If you had to do it all over again, what would you do different?

I really like the challenges and complexity of the large major multiple retail sector and would have moved into this area earlier.

GT -What’s the most embarrassing thing that’s ever happened to you at work?

On a business trip to France at Charles de Gaulle I got knocked flying by an airport vehicle when just crossing the road to meet my guests. Luckily my case saved me from injury but my suit was trashed!

GT -Who or what makes you laugh?

Many things make me laugh but Fawlty Towers I can watch time and again and still laugh at it, even though you know what’s coming next.

GT – Do you have any hidden talents?

I know all the words to Rappers Delight and can also play the trumpet.

GT -Who would be your favourite party guest?

Prince Harry, I think he would be a good laugh and life and soul of the party – in a Royal way of course.

GT -What is the greatest luxury in your life?

Tented safari holidays. They call them tents but in name only, these really are 5 star luxury.

GT -What is your favourite guilty pleasure?

Snowboarding holidays with my son. My wife hates the cold and never wants to come so we go as a boys’ trip and have a lot of laughs.

GT – Do you have any secret ambitions?

To retire in Africa.

GT -What’s your dream holiday destination?

Cape Town. I love it there, it’s the city that has everything.

GT – What are your three favourite movies of all time?

Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, The Godfather, Bourne Identity.

GT -What is your favourite book of all time?

Lord of the Rings.

GT -What’s your favourite pastime?

Wakeboarding.

GT – If you won the Lottery, what would you do?

Buy a game reserve in Africa.

GT – What would be your advice to someone thinking about coming into this industry?

Definitely do it! Take inspiration from the track record of success of current CEOs who have started at the bottom and worked their way up.
