Smurfit Kappa has been acknowledged for the quality and breadth of its understanding of innovation, environmental awareness, recycling and the overall functionality of packaging at the 2011 Starpack Awards.
The two Silver and three Bronze awards cover the whole range of packaging from a promotional pack that reduces the amount of raw materials used by 80%, and a unique free-standing pouch for alcoholic beverages, to a new design for fast food platters and a recyclable alternative to styrene packaging for toner cartridges.
The common denominator in each of the winning five awards is the way that Smurfit Kappa has applied the concept of sustainability to its packaging. Smurfit Kappa has a strong reputation for its company-wide environmental approach – with two Carbon Trust Standards and FSC and PEFC certification across the whole company – and is now being rewarded for its innovative application of those credentials. Speaking of their success, Clive Bowers, UK Corrugated CEO comments: “It is great to be acknowledged for our efforts in applying our knowledge and experience to our customers’ packaging requirements. We are leading the field in removing non-recyclable products from the waste stream and at the same time reducing the physical amount of packaging used.”

Evo-Stik ‘Sticks Like’ Promotional Multi Pack
This solution for a free-standing, triple wall pack reduces the number of components by 80%, delivers a high-quality brand recognition message and yet is strong and durable enough to deal with the rough handling that a functional, trade product has to endure. The pack is FSC certified and fully recyclable.
Bronze – Consumer Products Category
Domino’s Pizza Fast Food Lunch Platter
This new design allows an individual pack to be used, where previously two or three packs were required, by using a single piece outer with locking tabs and a separate internal divider forming five equal compartments for hot food. The solution significantly reduced the requirement for corrugated board and storage costs at Domino’s franchise outlets. The packs are produced from FSC certified corrugated board, use water based flexographic inks and are fully compostable.
Bronze – Alcoholic Beverages Category
Smurfit Kappa Bag In Box – PouchUp® for Manchester Drinks
A lightweight free standing pouch concept for alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages with a dispensing tap and 100% printed surface for branding, which extends the life of drinks after opening and has a carbon footprint of just 20% of a traditional glass container. The innovative Pouch-Up® design, which is being used by Manchester Drinks to package cocktails, does not require a secondary outer box, is recyclable and improves logistics by increasing the volume of liquid a delivery vehicle can carry – weighing just 2.3% of it’s filled weight.
