img0133aLoading and unloading equipment specialist Thorworld Industries has developed a highly informative specialist website www.yardramps.co.uk covering everything a potential purchaser, hirer or user needs to know about mobile yard ramps – also sometimes referred to as vehicle or container loading ramps.

The site explains what a yard ramp is, and outlines their advantages, together with information about ramp design and key features.

There’s a useful section on how to select the right kind of loading ramp for a specific application; depending on the expected frequency of use, the kind of loads to be moved, and the type of fork lift trucks involved.

Also included are the various factors that need to be taken into consideration when deciding whether to rent or buy a yard ramp.

All of the various types of yard ramps are described in detail, together with information about the appropriate safety and quality standards.

John Meale, Managing Director of Thorworld Industries, said: “We have produced this informative website as a service to the industry. As it covers all aspects of ramp design, selection and use, we hope that this will prove of value, with the opportunity for site visitors to print out and retain the content for future reference”.

The www.yardramps.co.uk website also provides a link through to the main Thorworld site, which contains full details of their market leading mobile yard ramps range.

Thorworld ramps are available as Standard, Deluxe and Super Deluxe (light, medium and heavy duty) models, with 6,000 kg, 7,000 kg, 10,000 kg, 12,000 kg or 15,000 kg capacities and in lengths  from 11 to 12.2 metres. Ruggedly built of solid beam construction, they have a serrated open grid deck for positive traction in all weathers.

The Super Deluxe/Recycling Ramp is available in both 12 and 15 tonne capacities and they are ideal for heavy duty applications, typically on a consistent three-shift operation, in the most rigorous working environments such as the recycling industry.

The Deluxe Ramp is available in a 10 tonne capacity and is ideally suited for medium duty applications, such as continual use on a single shift basis.

The Standard Ramp is available in 6, 7 and 10 tonne capacities, which are suitable for light duty applications where the ramp may only be in use up to 3-4 times a day.

A hand operated hydraulic pump quickly raises the ramp to the required height and they are equipped as standard with 1.8 metres of safety chain on each side for securing the ramp to the truck or loading dock.

Bespoke models can also be supplied to meet individual requirements and a comprehensive service and maintenance back-up facility is available to help ensure that the ramps are always kept in top condition.

A ramp rental facility is also provided through the company’s RentARamp operation, with a sale or return option.

Thorworld is firmly established as a leading, one-stop, single source supplier to the loading bay and materials handling sectors, and is recognised as both a leader and innovator in the provision of quality engineered equipment.

BSI registered with ISO 9002 accreditation since 1992, as well as CE mark certification, it was one of the first companies in the industry to achieve the ISO 9001:2000 international quality management standard.

Thorworld founder and Managing Director, John Meale is a well-known and respected figure in the European Materials Handling Industry and has recently been appointed Vice President of the Federation Europeenne de la Manutention (FEM), the European Federation of Materials Handling.

Additionally he is also President of FEM’s Elevating Equipment Product Group, a fellow of the Chartered Institute of Logistics & Transport (FCILT), a member of the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET), a former President of the British Materials Handling Federation (BMHF) and past President of the Association of Loading & Elevating Equipment Manufacturers (ALEM).

John Meale has previously warned that there have already been problems with the use of poor quality ramps from Eastern Europe and beyond and said: “Using inferior imported materials handling and loading bay equipment could not only be a threat to the safety of personnel in the workplace, but may also result in expensive downtime”.

“The solution is always to check with the supplier before you buy or rent that the equipment is CE marked and has been manufactured to EU quality and safety standards; don’t just assume it has been. It’s a false economy to buy or rent cheap substitutes if they are not totally safe to use, as it could lead to a serious accident.”

In addition to its mobile yard ramps, Thorworld provides a wide range of high quality loading & unloading equipment and loading bay accessories & safety aids, such as: dock shelters & seals, dock levellers, modular loading docks, dock plates & boards, dock & vehicle bumpers and wheel chocks, as well as the Truckloada mobile yardlift and the Dockloada scissor lift platform.
