The popularity of Scottish food abroad is at unprecedented levels, according to recent figures from Scottish Development International.

One of the growing exporters is Mackie’s of Scotland, a family-owned farming business in Aberdeenshire that began making ice cream in 1986 as a way of using up surplus cream. In June 2009 Mackie’s launched a range of crisps, in partnership with the Taylor family, potato growers and processors at their Perthshire based farm. With such quintessential Scottish flavours as Haggis and Aberdeen Angus, the crisps are proving to be a big hit at home and overseas.

As the volume of product being shipped around the world was increasing, and with new opportunities opening up in USA, Mackie’s needed help to find outer packaging with stronger colours for flavour and brand impact and stronger boxes to ensure that the product arrives in perfect condition  – and all at an affordable price.

DS Smith Packaging Livingston proposed a new design that incorporated R-Flute® to ensure consistent board and print quality with a revised perforation profile that forms squarely, opens reliably and optimises board strength. The new case offers a stunning fresh look that will help stimulate sales growth and is also popular for its ease of construction with Mackie’s production staff.

Kirstin Mackie, Managing Director of the crisp operation, said: “We’ve marketed ourselves on the basis of our rural Scottish setting and environmental credentials. People see Scotland as a beautiful place with clean air. So we’re delighted to have this new packaging that’s both environmentally sustainable and will help deliver a big impact in store, at home and abroad in new markets.”
