GT – Matt, what’s the most exciting thing about your job?

MB: The endless possibilities. We’re a fast paced company who adapt and make changes quickly. We aim to constantly be ahead of the changing face of retail and move at speed to ensure this.

GT – Who’s inspired you most in your career?

MB: My father – he still does, every day.

GT – If you were an item in a supermarket, what would you be?

MB: Probably Marmite – Some might say I’m not for everyone!

GT – If you had to do it all over again, what would you do different?

MB: Nothing, I’ve loved it all, still do!

GT – Who or what makes you laugh?

MB: Pretty much everything, I have a pretty diverse sense of humour! Anything from Alan Partridge to The Airplane films! Some of the office banter can be good, some can be terrible!

GT – Do you have any hidden talents?

MB: Yes, but you can’t see them!

GT – What is the greatest luxury in your life?

MB: My two year old daughter, Darcy. She keeps me smiling no matter what. Her innocent and simple outlook on life makes her the most intelligent person I know.

GT – What is your favourite guilty pleasure?

MB: The 80’s! The music, the fashion, the style. But I don’t feel guilty about it at all!

GT – Do you have any secret ambitions?

MB: Answering a questionnaire for The Grocery Trader, guess I can tick that off the list now!

GT – What’s your dream holiday destination?

MB: I’ve always held a special place in my heart for Ireland. Both my mother and father are Irish and I spent nearly every Summer at my grand parents home in a small village called Portlaw in the South of Ireland. The place and the people hold some wonderful memories for me which I love reliving whenever I go back there. Not to mention my fiancé is also Irish, so her family would have killed me if I’d said anywhere else!

GT – What are your three favourite movies of all time?

MB: Only 3!? Tough… Big Fish, Goodfellas, Back to the Future, Part 2!

GT – What is your favourite book of all time?

MB: Controversy Creates Cash – Eric Bischoff. Google it!

GT – If you won the Lottery, what would you do?

MB: Celebrate! A lot! I’d take my family on a year long holiday. I’ve sacrificed so much to make RBTE the success it is today and my family (who have always been understanding) have suffered more than anyone. Early starts, long hours and a lot of travelling means I haven’t been there for them as much as I should have over the last 5 years. I’d love to give them the time they deserve.

GT – What would be your advice to someone thinking about coming into this industry (apart from “don’t do it”)?

MB: Come and work with me. If you’re going to learn, learn from the best. Smiley face!
