isklar_all-bottles.jpgIsklar Norwegian glacial natural mineral water, which launched into the UK just 6 months ago with the aim of being the most environmentally responsible brand in Europe, has scooped silver in the Best Environmental Award category at the prestigious Water Innovation Awards 2008. The awards, organised by Zenith International Publishing Group, recognise excellence and creativity on a unique global platform.

Isklar’s impressive environmental credentials beat stiff competition to secure the silver award, recognised by an international panel of experts, made up of buyers and industry leaders, who judged over two hundred entries from forty countries.

CEO of Isklar, Peter Krogh says; “As a new entry to the market, we are extremely proud to be accepting this globally recognised award. Consumers are looking for everyday brands which allow them to enjoy their lifestyle whilst feeling reassured that it does not impact on the planet negatively. Isklar offers consumers this choice and as we’re committed to being the most environmentally responsible mainstream water brand in Europe, we are particularly delighted to be recognised for this award.”

Recently awarded Carbon Neutral status by the Carbon Neutral Company, the Isklar factory is powered by hydro-electricity, so no carbon emission is produced during bottling, and was created by converting an old woollen mill incorporating energy-efficient practices and state-of-the-art equipment. Nothing in the Isklar factory, or offices, goes to waste – carton boxes and paper (including paper towels) are recycled, trays and labels are sourced locally from suppliers who use hydro-electricity and all furniture is delivered with an environmentally friendly certificate (Nordic swan stamp) to certify that they are made from recycled products.

The Isklar bottling plant is located directly next to the Hardangerfjord, so the bottles can be loaded straight onto a container ship and the carbon footprint is minimised further by piggy-backing off existing shipping routes.  Where possible, all Isklar employees travel by tube or bicycle, including the CEO, in order to further minimalise the company’s carbon footprint. The award winning bottle is made from recyclable PET, and the state-of-the-art Group recycling facilities ensure that Isklar has the capacity to re-process 10 bottles for every one sold. To develop the ‘cradle to grave’ sustainability further, Isklar aim to incorporate recycled PET into new bottles over time, thus reducing demand for non-renewable resources.

Isklar launched into the UK earlier this year with a £2.5 million marketing campaign, which includes TV and print advertising supported by an integrated below-the-line and PR campaign.

Isklar’s launch team includes media agency Media Planning Group, advertising agency Hooper Galton, PR agency Biss Lancaster, web agency Hugo & Cat and promotional marketing agency Intelligent Marketing.

How can Isklar bottled water be considered as ‘carbon neutral’ – it is shipped to other countries. The factory would have to produce an equivalent amount of energy to offset the energy it uses to produce the water.
