LINPAC Packaging has developed a new range of protein trays in time for the barbecue season which will help consumers further reduce food waste this summer.

In line with its Fresh Thinking innovation strategy, Europe’s leading multi-material food packaging manufacturer has launched a range of split packs for both fresh and cooked meats which allow contents to be divided into separate portion-size compartments in modified atmosphere packaging (MAP) to reduce spoilage and contamination.

The new packs mean meat cuts will stay fresh and attractive for longer and consumers can store food in the fridge for longer without compromising food safety. They are the ideal solution for shoppers to buy meat for the barbecue, assured that they can preserve it as long as possible.

Joanna Stephenson, Vice-President Marketing & Innovation at LINPAC Packaging said: “We know that too often when consumers use regular packs, some of the contents often end up in the bin if they don’t get put on the barbeque. Well-designed packaging from LINPAC Packaging can help consumers use the right amount of food and then keep it in the best condition for longer, minimising the food waste trend we’re all conscious of in today’s difficult economic conditions.

“LINPAC split packs are designed so that the consumer can buy a tray of four chicken drumsticks for example, open one side of the pack and use two of them, then put the remaining two back in the fridge in a pack which is still completely sealed, with all the properties of an unopened pack.

“The amount of food wasted every year is still too high. It is estimated that each person within the EU wastes 179kg every year, totalling in excess of 89 million tonnes. That figure is expected to rise by 40% by 2020 if no further action is taken to minimise the amount we throw away.”

LINPAC Packaging is always looking to add to its offering of products for the barbecue season to ensure retailers have as wide a choice as possible to drive sales and so that their barbecue food looks appetising and tempting to consumers.

The company makes a range of trays for burgers, sausages, meatballs, kebabs and chicken pieces and has also developed a range of trays which are designed for packing more than one food product together to give retailers and packers the flexibility to offer consumers a cost-effective mix of barbecue meat products.

Another example of fresh thinking from LINPAC is the new poultry tray range – Rfresh® MB – new environmentally conscious rPET trays which contain up to 95% food grade post-consumer recyclate. Rfresh MB is produced with a PP base film layer providing strong seal integrity and has recently been launched with either a LINtop PP lock seal or LINtop PP peelable lidding film for optimum usability. Despite the high level of recycled material content there is no compromise on tray performance nor food safety as the material goes through the LINPAC food-grade in house “super cleaning” system.

Ms Stephenson added: “LINPAC Packaging is committed to offering new and innovative ideas to its customers year after year. We are always looking to develop and deliver fresh ideas to the market, ensuring we are offering sustainable packaging solutions which meet the needs of today’s retailers and consumers.”

LINPAC is unique in offering films which are compatible with their range of trays for optimum sealing. The company’s customer service team is at hand to offer advice on the best tray/film solutions and customers can be secure in the knowledge that they will have a consistent supply of products from LINPAC’s factories located throughout Europe.
