Bart Spices has been committed to Fairtrade since the launch of Fairtrade Vanilla Pods back in November 2005. Since then Bart has changed a number of standard products to Fairtrade, including Cinnamon Sticks, Ground Ginger and Black Peppercorns.
The Fairtrade initiative ensures that farmers in developing countries are paid a fair price for their produce. The products are certified by the Fairtrade Foundation which also means a social premium is paid which can be used to fund projects for clean water and education. The premium paid to the farmers is absorbed by Bart and not passed onto the consumer.
There is now an impressive 19 products in the Bart Fairtrade range and of these, 13 of them are also certified Organic by the Soil Association. Organic farming ensures no artificial fertilizers are used on crops and live stock is free range.
By making the range Fairtrade Organic, Bart is committed to ethical trading in terms of the people who farm the products and the land on which it grows.
The range includes Cardamom, Cinnamon, Cloves, Ginger, Turmeric, Black Pepper and White Pepper. These can be found in Waitrose, Sainsburys, Ocado, Booths and selected fine food retailers.
January 2011 sees the launch of the Why I Love Organic campaign by the Organic Trade board. There are lots of reasons to love organic produce, and this campaign hopes to inspire consumers to find their own personal reasons. The messages that this campaign hopes to highlight include the benefits of organic farming to nature, the benefits to animal welfare and the naturalness of foods.
