leonhard-weyEmmi’s Kaltbach Le Gruyere AOC took home two gold awards at the International Cheese Awards in Nantwich, last month with a third gold for Emmi’s Le Gruyere AOC Slices.

The world’s largest cheese show, which this year is celebrating 114 years of judging the best of UK and international cheeses, saw 3,230 entries from 24 countries across the 300 competition classes, with the winners selected by a panel of 140 judges, all experts in the dairy industry.

Kaltbach Le Gruyere AOC from the Villarimboud Dairy was chosen from over 30 entrees to be awarded top honours in the highly prestigious Speciality Cheese category for top Single Speciality Cheese, produced outside the UK.

Kaltbach Le Gruyere AOC from the Le Mouret Dairy took top Cheese made with Unpasteurised Milk, and Emmi’s Le Gruyere AOC Slices won Best Sliced Cheese produced outside of the UK.

Emmi’s Kaltbach Cave Aged Le Gruyere AOC AOC spends 12 months stored deep underground in carefully controlled conditions to enable it to develop to gourmet perfection. This smooth, raw-milk classic has a rustic rind and a rich and spicy flavour that develops into a sweet tangy caramel finish.

Emmi also scooped a further three awards:

• Silver for Piz Beaver in the Organic Speciality Cheese category

• Bronze in the Swiss Cheese category for Kaltbach Le Gruyere AOC produced in the Lignieres Dairy

• Bronze for Emmi Emmentaler Slices in the non-UK Sliced Cheese category

Just like the show, Switzerland’s premier dairy company has matured over more than 100 years, and it’s this commitment to time that helps to produce a portfolio of award-winning cheeses. Show Chairman Richard Paul said: “This is the biggest and best International Cheese Awards yet. We’ve had a record amount of entries and we have more categories. Because of the rigorous judging process, consumers can be assured that if they see a gold label on a product it has been judged by experts as outstanding.”

Julie Plant, Managing Director of Emmi UK added, “We are delighted to be flying the flag for Switzerland at the International Cheese Awards and were very proud to accept three gold awards for Le Gruyere AOC AOC. It’s fantastic to see it recognised as best speciality cheese, and to beat off such stiff competition from around the world.”

Based in Lucerne, Switzerland, Emmi is the largest Swiss milk processor and one of the most innovative premium dairies in Europe. The primary focus for its fresh products is on lifestyle, convenience and health, with yoghurt, muesli, and a range of iced coffee and chocolate drinks supplementing their famous cheese range. The brand also produces functional cheese miniCol – clinically proven to actively reduce cholesterol levels. Product innovation, gains in market share and acquisitions have contributed to several years of sustained growth in Switzerland and in international markets. In 2009, Emmi achieved net sales of CHF 2.62 billion and employed a total of 3,500 people (full-time equivalents) in Switzerland and abroad.
