Clealls enjoys busy late summer thanks to Mary Portas Queen of Shops and reliable TOSHIBA TEC EPoS terminals

clealls-017Clealls of Corfe, which was recently featured on TV programme Mary Portas Queen of Shops, is situated in the heart of the village of Corfe Castle and offers country convenience retailing at its best. Clealls takes pride in stocking a range of organic produce from local suppliers, including fresh fruit and vegetables, breads, cakes, puddings, pies, fresh sandwiches and rolls, plus all manner of essential day-to-day items.

As a small business, Clealls was eligible to apply for a Government investment grant to support their retail operation and in 2008 submitted a business proposal to update the inherited stand alone sales system, which had extremely limited functionality and no product line visibility. The application was successful and Clealls received 50% funding to support the purchase of a new EPoS solution.

After some market research of the EPoS marketplace and a demonstration of TOSHIBA hardware, Clealls selected TOSHIBA’S ST-A10 terminals. “With TOSHIBA, we could be assured of a stable platform from a world renowned manufacturer,” commented Juliet Porter, Owner of Clealls of Corfe.

With two TOSHIBA tills installed, the benefits to Clealls were immediately apparent. Transaction times have been greatly reduced, resulting in quicker customer service. Helped by the recent screening of the Mary Portas Queen of Shops TV show, thousands of customers visited Clealls during the busy summer months, so reliability of the TOSHIBA terminals and speed of service were even more vital to the business.

The stylish aesthetics of TOSHIBA’S ST-A10 touch screens provide a perfect fit with Cleall’s new image following the Queen of Shops team’s re-styling of the shop; and the small footprint has enabled the store to make maximum use of the counter space.

“For a relatively small initial cost outlay, there is a guaranteed return on investment in terms of both cost and time saving. What some small businesses may not realise is that there are options available, such as grants to assist in making the implementation of an EPoS system a much more affordable option,” Juliet said. “Mary Portas spent a lot of time with Chris and I reviewing the business; one thing she clearly did not want to change was our EPoS system, commenting that a reliable solution provided a good return on investment. This reinforced our confidence that we had made the right decision to invest in TOSHIBA tills.”

To serve its local community, as well as the many visitors to this beautiful part of the world, Clealls opens 7 days a week, from 8.00 am – 6.00pm, requiring a wide range of staff using the tills. The TOSHIBA terminals, with bright touch screens and intuitive customised layouts, make it easy for staff to use and involve minimal training. It is also very easy to set up new product lines on the system, something that is critical to Clealls, with so many seasonal local produce items.

Clealls also offers a monthly account facility for local customers and businesses, such as hotels, removing the need for them to pay cash for each transaction. All accounts are set up on the TOSHIBA tills, enabling Clealls to control credit accounts through the EPoS system. The business uses the system to obtain detailed analysis of each month’s sales. Since the TOSHIBA tills were installed, Clealls has found financial management  much easier, including balancing the books, management of the lottery takings and PayPal terminal, as well as controlled VAT and sales and margin analysis reporting. The system also allows for time specific promotions to be set and automatically prompts staff to sell promotions.

“Even for a retail operation of this size, it’s important to have an EPoS solution in place; it will give a crucial ROI and is an invaluable tool in running a successful business,” Juliet concluded.
