Carrier Commercial Refrigeration Ibérica, a leader in high technology heating, air-conditioning and refrigeration solutions, has reached a new milestone with the installation of its southern-most CO2OLtec® refrigeration system in a Carrefour hypermarket in Alzira, Valencia, Spain. The environmentally sustainable system uses the natural refrigerant CO2 to reduce the store’s carbon footprint and improve energy efficiency. This installation represents a significant step towards expanding the use of CO2 refrigeration systems in areas with higher ambient temperatures. Carrier is part of UTC Building & Industrial Systems, a unit of United Technologies Corp. (NYSE: UTX).
Located in eastern Spain, temperatures in Alzira average 30 degrees Celsius in summer. Such consistently high temperatures are known to have an effect on the efficiency of transcritical CO2refrigeration systems. Carrier’s innovative solution utilises mechanical hydrocarbon sub-coolers and economizers incorporated in the transcritical CO2 booster system to allow food retail stores situated in higher-temperature regions to install natural refrigerant solutions that can reduce greenhouse gas emissions and consume less energy than traditional systems using hydrofluorocarbon (HFC) refrigerants.
“We’re looking to install more CO2refrigerant solutions as part of our strategy to gradually substitute hydroflurocarbon-based refrigerants in our facilities since 2013,” said José Francisco Mollá, technical director, Carrefour España. “We’ve already installed four full CO2 systems in stores across Spain, and have been happy with the outcomes in terms of energy efficiency. We’re particularly interested in how this installation will compare, given the difference in ambient climate to our other installations to date, which are located in northern Spain.”

Carrier has the right refrigerant solution for every application, but not every refrigerant is suitable for every application.
