Dealing with distressed loads is a growing area for Hauliers, Loss Adjusters, Port Health Authorities, Environmental Health Departments and the Food Standards Agency, with food producers now facing an ever increasing number of contaminated food consignments requiring expert intervention.

Previously a distressed load would be destroyed or sent to landfill, that was until about ten-years ago when Oakland International, a Midlands based supply chain specialist, identified a specific need for a service capable of dealing with distressed loads, but crucially able to save the majority of the consignment from going to waste.

Oakland International’s Quality Assurance Manager, Louise Smith, explains: “As a responsible family business Oakland has a culture and enduring commitment to embrace sustainability through innovation and change. Our advanced approach and desire to be sector leading has helped us create a unique and groundbreaking service that can save up to 90% of product, which otherwise would have been completely destroyed. To date around 1,800 tonnes of food has been saved from going to waste, and those products which cannot be saved sent to nominated anaerobic digestion plant centres to be used for renewable energy, with nothing going to landfill.”

What classifies as a Distressed Load?

Distressed loads can be caused by a vehicle having the incorrect temperature therefore causing the stock and point of delivery to be deemed unsafe, a load moving whilst in transit, labeling errors and more recently clandestine infiltration.

A finalist at this year’s Global Freight Awards, Oakland works closely with local Environmental Health, hauliers and loss adjusters, with their reputation built on understanding how to limit and alleviate loss across all service solutions of ambient, chilled and frozen food product in this specialist sector.

Oakland is receiving increasing numbers of calls for their distressed load service which has a full HACCP system in operation and is fully traceable and BRC accredited. Oakland also benefits from regular contact with a specifically trained team of Regulatory Services Environmental Health Officers who acknowledge their expertise in this way of working as being highly effective and efficient, awarding Oakland a certificate of good practice.
