joanna-simonCIVA (Conseil Interprofessionnel des Vins d’Alsace), the regional trade body for Alsace Wines, is delighted to announce that it has joined forces with well-known and respected journalist Joanna Simon who is writing a regular monthly column for the new Alsace Wines website (www.alsacewines.co.uk).

In her new column Joanna will look at the key Alsace grapes Gewurztraminer, Pinot Gris, Riesling and sparkling Crémant d’Alsace. Whilst Alsace wines are excellent matches for many types of international dishes, this year Joanna will specifically identify food matches concentrating on Alsace wines’ brilliant matching potential for Asian style cuisines. The column will also include recommendations of Joanna’s Alsace wines of the month.

Joanna Simon comments: ‘I love Asian food and Alsace wine. I also love a food and wine matching challenge and there’s no question that the variously hot, sour, sweet, salty and bitter flavours you find in Asian and fusion dishes can trip up most wines. I would skip the fieriest curries, but just about everything else can be successfully matched to one or other Alsace grape variety.’

The tone and style of the new column matches that of the new Alsace Wines website, which aims to raise awareness about Alsace wines in a modern and accessible manner. The website, www.alsacewines.co.uk, includes general information about the wines, appellations and the region; as well as details about activities in the UK; food and wine matching suggestions; and recipes. A trade-focused section of the site includes press releases, a filmed tasting tutorial and a press information pack. Further content will be added throughout the campaign.

Another exciting feature just launched on www.alsacewines.co.uk is the webcast on matching Asian food and Alsace wines. Joanna Simon teamed up with celebrity chef from channel 5’s Chinese Food in Minutes, Ching He Huang, renowned for her easy-to-prepare modern Chinese cuisine to discuss why the fruity flavours and structure of Alsace wines are spot on with vibrant Asian food. The video is available on www.alsacewines.co.uk and various consumer websites.

Richard Kannemacher, marketing director for CIVA, comments:  “The key objective of the website is to talk directly to the consumers in the UK and to help demystify the wines, making them much more accessible and relevant. We are delighted to have the creative input from Joanna for this site – her writing style marries perfectly with the clear and open style of the site.”
