Welcome to the September issue of The Grocery Trader. As we near the end of quarter 3, in this edition we have a major feature on Merchandising & Display, a key focus for retailers all year round, in conjunction with industry experts the Shop Display Equipment Association and some of their members. And with schools about to start again and December looming, we take a last look at Back To School and our first look of 2014 at Christmas products.

FrontOur front-page stories concern two businesses, tesa and Badgemaster, one global, the other British, who have both got on quietly with building their markets and become leaders in their fields. tesa systems are now the packaged goods industry’s definitive reclosure tape engineering solution. Their Lift & Reseal system is in use around the world with major retailers and brand owners specifying the system on a wide range of products and pack sizes, from small, high value snacks to economy budget products. The company is now developing packaging solutions for manufacturers and retailers in the UK, Europe, Russia and Japan, delivering competitive edge through the consumer benefits of enjoying fresh food across extended periods of use and storage.

Already the UK’s largest name badge manufacturer, Badgemaster has now acquired its principal competitor, Akorn Badge Company, the most significant event to date in its growing list of achievements. Key milestones in Badgemaster’s history since its humble beginnings in the back of a Portakabin in Hucknall, Nottinghamshire in 1992 include being granted the Royal Warrant by the Queen in 2006 for supplying name badges to the staff of the royal households; gaining the British Standards Institute ISO 9001 accreditation for quality management in 2010; the ISO 14001, the highest environmental accreditation in 2013; and most recently, Badgemaster’s Founder and Managing Director, John Bancroft, being granted an MBE for services to business in Nottinghamshire.

Finally, The Grocery Trader would like to mark the passing of Gerry Coveney on 4th August. Gerry ran various respected trade advertising and PR agencies in London until he retired in 2001 due to ill health. A big character, he looked after many big name clients, supported the trade media and in the process nurtured a number of individuals who are now running agencies of their own, leading the trade communications effort for major companies, or producing trade magazines. For many years Gerry was also a driving force in the fundraising efforts of the National Grocers Benevolent Fund, up until its transformation into Caravan in 2001.
Gerry brought a unique positivity and enthusiasm to everything he did, together with a great depth of knowledge, and inspired everyone who worked with him to give their best. He will be sorely missed.
